Chapter 16

Tia

Today marked the Friday before the end of Spring Break. Tia had roughly 46 mid-terms waiting to be graded by Monday morning. Not an impossible task but definitely a time-consuming one. The next two days would find her drowning in papers and red ink. With her weekend being booked solid, she chose to milk the day for all that it possessed.

For the past three days, Tia had been spending time with her sister, Bethany. Originally, she had reservations about inviting her sister to hang out with her and Mateo. But, of course, Mario thought that it would be a great ice breaker. Then again, he was at work for most of the day and didn’t have to figure out how to keep an estranged sister and an energetic four-year-old child entertained.

Remarkably enough, the ride hadn’t been as bumpy as Tia anticipated. Mateo took to his new aunt like he had known her for his entire life and Bethany latched on to him as well. Beth didn’t mind watching the kiddie movies that Mateo suggested and she chatted with him more than she did with the adults. Happily, Bethany browsed through his expansive bookshelf and chose books to read to him. Watching her sister with Matty made Tia understand just how much Beth regretted not being a part of her own children’s lives.

To celebrate their final day together, Tia planned an entire afternoon of fun. It catered to everyone, children and adults, with a desire to bounce or jump. As expected, on a Saturday afternoon, the place was full of parents who wanted to give their hyperactive kids a means to burn off excess energy.

After doing their own share of bouncing to keep up with a super-happy toddler, both Bethany and Tia were on the verge of collapse. For some reason, Tia hadn’t foreseen being dog-tired from an afternoon spent hopping around. She obviously had gotten her age mixed up with her shoe size.

As much as she wanted to go home and submerge in the Jacuzzi, Mateo had not forgotten about the promised trip to the toy store. As if he didn’t already have enough toys for a school full of children, he went up and down every aisle occasionally asking if he could have something new.

Unlike most kids, Mateo was calm and cool when he could not get the things that he wanted. As a child, he didn’t quite understand how privileged he was but Rio and Tia made sure to keep him grounded and appreciative. No falling out and temper tantrums were allowed.

Despite her resolve to look and not buy, Tia had a strong weakness for educational toys and gadgets. When they came across a car that would help Matty learn the states and their capitals, she bought it. At the register, Tia sighed as he pressed the car’s buttons. Mateo was her pride
